Apart from being a physical barrier a fence is also carries information. The chosen style, material and dimensions gives every fence its own character. A wooden picket fence gives off a different message than a cast iron fence with a huge gate. The use of language and pictures can also be used to convey the message. Often fences feature one of the many variations of the “beware of dog” sign. The guard dog is a strong symbol in the world of security, it doesn’t have to be physically present, just hinting at its existence is enough.

In three prototypes I’ve embedded this information into the fence, the use of language is no longer necessary.

Collage of fences in Linz, Austria, during a trip I found that basically every house has their own type of fence, giving them a character of their own.

This gives the dog space to enter the public space whilst still protecting people from getting bitten. Steel profiles, bent and welded into a frame.
